COURIER
JUNE 2011
To Our Church Family:
As you know, we have entered the next phase of our life long journey with God. We have begun the search for our next pastor. Many of you have been wondering where we are at in this process and are anxious to be underway. Session wants to keep you as up to date as we possibly can. We will be sharing information with you through minute for missions as well as in the Courier.
Before we can elect the Pastor Nominating Committee, Session is required to complete a mission study, which is then submitted for approval from Presbytery. The purpose of the mission study is to make sure we, the church as a whole, know where we are and where we want to go as a church.
Session has been holding work meetings to go through the information provided by the surveys that we completed as a church, the all member visitation in 2007 and the US Congregational Life Survey in 2008. The information being gathered will be complied into a formal report that will be available for the PNC to use the search for the new pastor.
Session is asking that each of you take some time to reflect on where you are both personally and as a member of First Pres on your journey with Christ. What are your needs and how can the church help you meet those needs? What are the needs of our church and what kind of pastor do you see helping us meet those needs. What direction would you like to see the church move in over the next five years. Write down your
ideas and suggestions and get them to an elder by June 15 if you want your thoughts to be considered in the mission study.
The Nominating Committee has been meeting and working to compile a slate of members to be presented for election once the mission statement has been approved by Presbytery.
The Music and Worship Committee has been working hard to find a Temporary Part Time Pulpit Supply to fulfill our needs. This person would start around the beginning of August and his or her duties would include preaching on Sundays, Pastoral care and moderating session meetings.
In the meantime, there are local pastors who have volunteered to be available for pastoral care needs. If you, or someone you know, are in need of pastoral care, please call the Elder on Call or the church office so that we can be of service to you.
Please talk to your session members. We are here as people of God for you. Remember, the church is its people and together we can accomplish whatever God gives us.
Serving Christ Together,
The Members of the Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi

Session & TRUSTEES NOTES
from the May 11th Session meeting:
The meeting was moderated by the Rev. Dr. Cheryl Ann Elfond. Guests Judy Wildenstein, our Committee on Ministry Liaison and the Rev. Viktoria Berlik, Committee on Ministry member were present.
Opened the meeting with devotions and prayer.
Approved the consent agenda including the minutes from the April 13th regular Session meeting.
An exit interview was conducted by two representatives from the Committee on Ministry. The Session shared thoughts on our spiritual growth as a Congregation and as a Session during our time with Pastor Allen, discussing our strengths, weaknesses and ways to build a strong relationship with the next Pastor.
The Session participated in a Healthy Congregations activity entitled “Where Is Your Focus”. Session members will consider where our church needs continued support or change to become more missional. The responses will be gathered by the Clerk and forwarded to the Rev. Dr. Cheryl Ann Elfond, Judy Wildenstein (our Committee on Ministry Liaison) and the Rev. Viktoria Berlik (Committee on Ministry member).
The Session discussed a job description for a temporary, part-time pulpit supply to begin August 1. This description will be fine-tuned by the Personnel and Music, Worship and Sacraments committees.
Discussed the Mission Study for our Congregation, which would provide direction for the PNC (Pastor Nominating Committee). Looked at sample Mission Studies from other Congregations. Planned a work gathering of the Session for May 19 at 7:00 p.m.
Approved a motion for Nancy Althaus and Susie Little to attend the next Presbytery meeting if the way be clear on June 14 in Dryden.
Approved a motion to establish a relationship with St. Pauly for clothing collection.
A motion was approved to give $50 to the People Who Care for the After Prom Party on May 21.
The meeting was closed with prayer at 10:04 pm after prayer requests were shared. The next regular meeting of the Session will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 9th.
APPORTIONMENT
The Per Capita amount for 2011 has been set at $31.23 per member. Per Capita apportionment is based on membership as of December 31, 2009 reported in the 2009 Statistical Report. Our apportionment is based on 232 members giving a total of $7,245.36. To date we have received $2,726.31. The money is paid by our church to cover our share of basic operation costs of our Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly. Each member is invited to contribute $31.23 to help pay this obligation.

QUIET SPACE
“Rest is not idleness,” said John Lubbock, “and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water or watching the clouds float across the sky is hardly a waste of time.”
Most of us need more, not less, rest built into our daily routine. Only when we are quiet can we hear God’s whisper.
Summer is a great time to find a peaceful, outdoor spot to read, rest and pray — even if only for a few minutes. God is eagerly waiting for us to make space for him.

Beloved, rest
Busy. We’re all so very busy, and we consider that a virtue. We measure our days by how much we accomplish.
Long ago, the psalmist was aware of mankind’s workaholic tendencies. “It is in vain,” he wrote, “that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives sleep to his beloved” (Psalm 127:2, NRSV).
Balance, beloved. God isn’t a slave driver. Work and rest in good measure, for God is pleased to give you both.
"On An Historical Note"
**********************************************************************************************************
The First Presbyterian Church History and Archive Committee is diligently working to collect, document, organize and conserve any important historical data, documents, records of gifts, letters, minutes of church boards etc. that form a part of the very rich tapestry of the history of our church. You can be a part of this ministry of conservation; if you have pertinent information or artifacts that may be of historical significance please contact a member of the committee or Clara Stewart, Director of Archives and Collections. At present, the committee would like to invite your assistance in locating some important documents which are missing. The minutes of the Board of Trustees Meetings from 1945-1983 are missing. As you go about your activities in the church rooms and storage areas, you might come across these "wanted" reports; or perhaps you know a trustee from that time period who might know something of their location...please join the investigation! Consider yourself "sworn in."

MUSIC, WORSHIP & SACRAMENTS COMMITTEE
Now that a final list of Pulpit Supply (through the end of July) has been approved by Session, the Committee has begun the process of finding possible candidates for the Part-time temporary pulpit supply position. We met with Elder Lou Dibble, Personnel Committee, to discuss the needs of our church. Working together, a final draft of the job description for this position will be ready for the next Session meeting. The
canidate (s) for the position will be asked to lead a worship service for us, after which Session will interview any candidates and determine who would best lead our worship services and provide pastoral care while the PNC searches for a new pastor for First Presbyterian Church of Delhi.
Below is the list of upcoming Pulpit Supplies.

June 12 – Pentecost, Communion: Rev. Barry Downing

TUESDAY MORNING EXERCISE CLASS
Exercise Class has ended for the summer with the last class being May 24th, 2011.
Thanks to all who participated and to Shirley Wood for traveling from Walton each week to lead the class. The Mission Committee hopes to resume this class in the fall. Watch the Courier for more information. We look forward to seeing you there!
Perspective
Copenhagen’s Church of Our Lady, Denmark’s national cathedral, features life-sized marble statues of Jesus and his 12 apostles, sculpted by famous Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen.
Although the faces of the apostles are easily visible, you can’t look into the face of the Christ-figure unless you kneel at his feet. This, indeed, is where our faith grows and our hope endures: at the feet of our Savior.
