Mission Emphasis

The Delhi Clergy Association is again sponsoring the backpack project, helping to provide backpacks to Delaware Academy students in need. The United Ministry of Delhi is coordinating the effort this year. Cash contributions received last year were greatly appreciated, and were used to purchase the backpacks, which are the greatest expense. Checks should be made payable to ‘Delhi Clergy Association”, with ‘school supplies’ on the memo line and may be left in the church office. Items needed for the backpacks include:

Pencils
colored pencils
crayons
markers

lined paper
spiral notebooks
erasers
composition books

pocket folders
pens
2” binders
anything else thought to be useful for school!

Please submit all donations by Wednesday, August 18th so they can be set up and delivered to the school for distribution to students prior to the first day of classes. There is a box in the Church Office for school supply donations. Cash donations should also be left in the church office. Thank you for your help with this important local mission!
Any and all donations are always appreciated and will be welcomed by Delhi area students in all grades. If you have any questions, please call the church office at 746-2155.

******************************************************************************************************

Dennis Gaboury has returned from Zimbabwe for the summer and will be participating in our worship service on August 8th. ZimKids is able to help needy children and their families because of the generous contributions of people like us. Remember them in your prayers as well as your giving,

Choir News

The Chancel Choir will resume rehearsals in September, please watch this website, the September Courier and the church Life section of the bulletin for more information. New and returning voices are always needed and welcomed so please consider joining our ministry of music.

Beginning the week of August 18, 2010, there will be a Beginner Bell Workshop. Four of our Campanile Choir members attended Pinnacle (the National Handbell Conference) this summer and are ready to share what they have learned. This workshop is geared toward anyone who is interested in learning the very basics of handbell ringing. The focus will be on technique, basic music reading skills and getting acquainted with the handbells and chimes. We anticipate a 5-6 week program, meeting Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm for 30-45 minutes each week. At this time, we are not planning to ring in church, although all may decide that they'd like to share their new-found talent. Please let Bea Mooney (829-5507 or moonbeam413@gmail.com) know if you are interested.

The Campanile Choir will resume rehearsals in the fall.  Watch for exciting new structure and ideas in the fall! Please see Gayle Olsen or Bea Mooney if you are interested in participating in a beginners bell choir.

Watch for information on the Chapel Choir and Chapel Bells coming soon!

Thanks to Mrs Malcolm and Mrs Mooney for their work with the Chapel Choir and Rainbow Ringers this year. They always bring joy with their music!

News from MUSIC, WORSHIP & SACRAMENTS COMMITTEE

Great events are planned by the Music, Worship and Sacraments Committee for the Fall/Winter of 2010.
We are planning to have a special music event for each month beginning September 2010. Our church has always enjoyed music and the excitement it brings to our church family and community. Gathering at these events has proved to be uplifting to the soul and body and has also brought our church and community together for fellowship. Our committee along with the Fellowship Committee will be presenting events in Gospel Singing, Choral concerts, instrumental events and also the REDEDICATION OF OUR CHURCH ORGAN - PLANNED FOR NOVEMBER 7, 2010. So please mark your calendars to be in church that day and also for the organ concert in the afternoon. It will be an event that you will not want to miss and will remember always.

The Mission Committee has challenged each committee to develop a mission statement/goal. We, Worship, Music and Sacraments committee, have discussed this in great length and decided that our goal as a committee for 2010 is "MUSIC OUTREACH"; to bring back our church members that may have followed other paths; to reach out to new members through the music of song, gospel and instrumental. We hope that our mission of music outreach will serve as a way to attract people, allow them to see God's word through music to "sooth the soul" and set First Church music as a mission for the Lord. So come join our mission and music. More to follow in future Courier Newsletters. So stay tuned as great things are happening.

Items to Save that Lend a Hand

With a little effort, you can contribute to a cause without spending any extra money! Just save your cancelled stamps following the instructions below.

Cancelled Postage Stamps – cut ¼ inch beyond stamp. These are used to buy Bibles and Religious Education material both in the United States and around the world.
The method for preparing stamps helps to determine their value. Follow these steps:
• Stamps should be carefully trimmed with a ¼-inch margin around the entire stamp or set of stamps. Please do not cut the stamp.
• Stamps damaged during trimming are of no value and should be discarded.
• Do not tear or peel stamps from the envelope or leave a large ragged piece of paper around the stamp. Metered imprints are of no value and should not be saved.
• Discard stamps with extremely heavy canceled markings, those with pen or pencil marks and those with obvious defects such as staple holes, held on with tape, etc. Stamps cut by letter openers and machines cannot be marketed and should be discarded.
• Leave stamps attached to very old post cards (pre-1950) as the entire post cards are worth much more intact.
• Do not fasten stamps together with tape, rubber bands, thread, paper clips or staples. Stamps need not be counted since they are sold by weight, not number of pieces.
We also collect Box tops for education – found on many General Mills products. These are given to Delaware Academy to help pay for educational supplies not in the budget.

Pull tabs from beverage, soups, cat and dog food, etc. (any aluminum pull tab). These are used to purchase medical and non-medical items for Shriner's Hospitals for Children.
